Search and rescue is more than a volunteer hobby—it is a profound commitment to our community. Washoe County Search and Rescue (WCSAR) operates as an official volunteer arm of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO).
When the call comes, our team drops everything to head into the Nevada backcountry. If you have the dedication, the physical drive, and the heart to serve your community on their worst day, we want you in our ranks.
Because we operate under the authority of law enforcement, every member is a sworn Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff of the WCSO. This designation brings a high level of responsibility and discipline.
Field Readiness: You must maintain the physical fitness and mental resilience required to operate in harsh weather, rough terrain, and high-stress environments, 24/7/365.
Rigorous Training: All members undergo intensive training in land navigation, wilderness survival, tracking, search tactics, and emergency medical care.
Operational Dedication: You must be willing to attend monthly meetings, regular field training exercises, and respond to emergency call-outs whenever possible.
Because our members are sworn auxiliary deputies, our vetting process is thorough to ensure the safety of our team and the public. To apply, you must meet the following baseline requirements:
Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.
Background: Must successfully pass a comprehensive background check and fingerprinting conducted by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
Integrity: Maintain a high standard of personal conduct, reliability, and professionalism.
Teamwork: Possess a strong ability to follow a chain of command and work cohesively under tight, high-pressure timelines.
Our academy and recruitment cycles open periodically throughout the year. Fill out our brief interest form on this page, and a membership coordinator will reach out to you with details regarding our next informational meeting, physical fitness standards, and application steps.
